It’s never too early to start looking for the name of your future companion.
Choosing a name for your dog or puppy is not always easy, it’s like choosing the name of a newborn baby.
In Belgium as in France, pedigree dogs must respect the rule of lettering, i.e. all dogs born in the same year must have the same initial.
In France, if your dog is registered in the L.O.F (Livre des Origines Français), there are certain rules to respect regarding the choice of your dog’s name, such as its first letter which is determined according to its year of birth.
In 2020, it is officially the year of the “T” for dogs in Belgium and the year of the “R” for dog names in France.
Choosing a name for your dog or puppy is often one of the most important steps for owners. It defines the identity of your four-legged friend and underlines his character.
Moreover, while many humans think that their first names can influence their personality and their lives, the same could well be true for our dog friends.
One can indeed imagine that the daily life and character of a doggie named Ratatouille or Titou will not be the same as those named Rex or Tyson.
How to choose the name of your dog
The choice of a name for your dog is not only based on his personality and the plans his owner has for him. It is advisable to choose a short and punchy noun, of 2 syllables on average. This makes it much easier to communicate with your companion.
The dog’s name is essential to its education: once the dog understands that you call him by his first name, he will be able to obey your orders and change his behaviour every time you call him by his first name.
Dogs are more receptive to short names, redundant sounds and vowels.
If you prefer to opt for a sophisticated first name, it is better to think of a nickname to remind your doggie (example: Rata for Ratatouille, Rodo for Rodolphe, …).
Finding the name that will perfectly suit your dog’s personality can be a real challenge, but it’s also an exciting part of adopting a dog.
In 2015, it was the year of the “L’s” but we had a crush on the name “Zaira” which is pronounced “Za”.ïra”.
Zaira’s pedigree name is Lady Zaira de l’Elevage du Petit Mont d’Eden.
In a few weeks’ time, we’ll be welcoming a Shetland Sheepdog named “Riley”…
Like Zaira, we’ll go get her from a French kennel, the Cèdre Enchanté, hence the name starting with an “R” and not a “T”.
